you really don't need to do much anymore outside of installing a few extra packages. just make sure your camera is set to usb mode (page 225 in the d300 manual) if you want to transfer pictures directly from the camera to your computer. or get a usb card reader :) but in either case, your card will be mounted in /media and you can use whatever means to transfer the images from your card to your workstation. personally, I use my camsync script but you can use whatever means you like.
